Soldier-martyrs of the early Church · Feast: 7 November

“Be faithful until death, and I will give you the crown of life.” Revelation 2:10
The Eastern Churches remember on this day thirty-three Christians martyred at Melitene in Lesser Armenia (in present-day Türkiye) in the persecution under the emperor Diocletian, around AD 300. Tradition names their leader Hieron, a strong farmer from Tyana who had been forced into the army, together with thirty-two companions.
The details of their story come to us through later Eastern accounts and are best understood as tradition. What is certain is that the Church of the East kept their memory as men who refused to deny Christ when soldiers were ordered to sacrifice to idols.
They strengthened one another; faith is lived in community.
Farmers and soldiers, not scholars, chose Christ above life.
Faithfulness unto death receives a crown no one can take away.
Tradition says Hieron, a powerful farmer forced into the army, led his companions in refusing to offer sacrifice, and they died together.
The risen Christ promises the crown of life to the faithful (Revelation 2:10).
They faced death together; we need brothers and sisters in faith.
Daily faithfulness in small trials prepares us for great ones.
Dear friends, today the Church remembers thirty-three men who died together for Christ at Melitene, around the year 300. They were ordinary men, farmers and soldiers, and when they were ordered to sacrifice to idols, they said no.
The risen Christ said to the Church: be faithful until death, and I will give you the crown of life (Revelation 2:10). These martyrs believed that promise more than the threats of the emperor.
Few of us will face such a choice. But each day we face small ones: to tell the truth when lying is easier, to defend the weak when silence is safer, to pray when we are tired. Let us strengthen one another as they did, and be faithful in little things. Amen.
Lord Jesus, you gave the martyrs of Melitene strength to be faithful until death. Through their prayers, make us faithful in the small trials of each day and bring us to the crown of life. Amen.
