Word for the day

“Then he said to the disciple, “Here is your mother.” And from that hour the disciple took her into his own home.” John 19:27

Reflection

Today the Church celebrates the Shunoyo, the “departure” of the Mother of God. The Eastern Churches sing of her Dormition, her falling asleep in the Lord; the Catholic Church professes, as defined by Pope Pius XII in 1950, that “the Immaculate Mother of God, the ever-virgin Mary, having completed the course of her earthly life, was assumed body and soul into heavenly glory.” The body that carried the Son of God was not left to corruption. Where Christ the Head has gone, his Mother has followed, and where she is, we hope to be.

The Old Testament readings speak of the ark. The ark of the covenant held the tablets of the Law, the manna and Aaron's rod; when the priests carried it into the Jordan, the waters parted and the people crossed into the promised land. The Letter to the Hebrews describes that tabernacle with its ark. The Fathers saw in Mary the true Ark of the Covenant: she carried within her the Word, the Bread of Life, the true High Priest. Today the Ark crosses the Jordan of death into the promised land of heaven.

From the beginning God promised: “I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and hers; he will strike your head.” The woman who stands against the serpent is fulfilled in Mary, the New Eve. Psalm 45 sings: “at your right hand stands the queen in gold of Ophir.” Mary, assumed into heaven, stands beside her Son as Queen, not to rule apart from him, but to intercede for his brothers and sisters.

At the foot of the Cross Jesus says to his mother: “Woman, here is your son,” and to the disciple: “Here is your mother. And from that hour the disciple took her into his own home.” And in the evening Gospel: “whoever does the will of my Father in heaven is my brother and sister and mother.” Mary is mother because she heard God's word and kept it perfectly. The Assumption is the reward of that faithful “yes”, and a promise for all who do the Father's will.

Homily outline

Theme: “The Mother taken up to glory.”

Today we celebrate the Shunoyo, the passing of the Mother of God. The Church teaches as revealed dogma that the Immaculate Mother of God, the ever-Virgin Mary, having completed the course of her earthly life, was assumed body and soul into heavenly glory (Pius XII, Munificentissimus Deus, 1950). The Fifteen Days' Fast ends; it is also India's Independence Day.

1. The Woman of the promise

“I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and hers; he will strike your head, and you will strike his heel.” Genesis 3:15
“A great portent appeared in heaven: a woman clothed with the sun, with the moon under her feet, and on her head a crown of twelve stars.” Revelation 12:1

Apply: Pray the Hail Mary slowly today, thinking of her victory with Christ.

2. The Queen at the King's right hand

“Daughters of kings are among your ladies of honor; at your right hand stands the queen in gold of Ophir.” Psalm 45:9
“For he has looked with favor on the lowliness of his servant. Surely, from now on all generations will call me blessed; for the Mighty One has done great things for me, and holy is his name.” Luke 1:48–49

Apply: Look at your own body with reverence: it is destined for resurrection.

3. “Here is your mother”

“I will greatly rejoice in the LORD, my whole being shall exult in my God; for he has clothed me with the garments of salvation, he has covered me with the robe of righteousness.” Isaiah 61:10
“When Jesus saw his mother and the disciple whom he loved standing beside her, he said to his mother, “Woman, here is your son.” Then he said to the disciple, “Here is your mother.” And from that hour the disciple took her into his own home.” John 19:26–27

Apply: Take Mary “into your home”: renew family consecration to her today.

Where Mary has gone, the Church hopes to follow.

Let us thank God for our Mother in glory, and pray for our nation on Independence Day.

Take-home resolution: Pray the Rosary as a family for India and for peace this week.

Full homily

Dear brothers and sisters, today is the Shunoyo, the day our Mother departed this life and was taken into heaven. Our Eastern tradition sings of her “falling asleep”; the Catholic Church teaches with certainty that Mary, having finished the course of her earthly life, was taken up body and soul into the glory of heaven. The womb that carried God was not left to decay.

The readings speak of the ark. When the priests carried the ark into the Jordan, the waters parted and the people crossed into the promised land. The ark carried the tablets of the Law and the manna. Mary carried the Word of God and the true Bread from heaven. She is the living Ark, and today the Ark crosses the river of death into the promised land of heaven.

At the Cross Jesus gave her to us: “Here is your mother.” And the disciple took her into his home. Have we taken her into ours? Is there a place for her in our family prayer, our decisions, our sorrows? And Jesus also said: whoever does the will of my Father is my mother and sister and brother. Mary is great because she did God's will perfectly.

Today is also Independence Day, eighty years of a free India. Let us pray to our Mother for our nation: for justice, for peace, for the poor, for freedom of faith. And let us live as people whose bodies too are destined for glory: with purity, with dignity, with love. Holy Mother of God, pray for us. Amen.

For children

Children, today we celebrate that Mother Mary went to heaven, body and soul, to be with Jesus!

Jesus gave Mary to us as our mother when he was on the Cross. She loves us and prays for us.

Let's pray the Hail Mary together today, and thank God for our country India too!

Prayer

Almighty God, you took up the Immaculate Virgin Mary, Mother of your Son, body and soul into heavenly glory. Grant that, taking her into our homes as the beloved disciple did, and doing your will as she did, we may follow her into the joy of your kingdom. Bless our nation India with justice and peace. Amen.
