A note on words: Chirattakonam is a parish of the Syro-Malankara Catholic Church, which prays in the West Syriac tradition. So this page says Holy Qurbana for the Eucharist, and the Malayalam page uses വി. കുർബാന, യേശു and ക്രിസ്തു, as that Church does. Where the priest's own English account says "Mass", we say Qurbana.
A note on the place: English pages often say "Trivandrum", because the parish belongs to that archeparchy. The parish listing gives its address in Kollam district. Others say Thiruvananthapuram. The priest's name appears as Fr Johnson Karoor in some reports and Fr Johnson Karnoor in others.
The account
The parish
The parish listing says it was set up on 25 December 1961 by Archbishop Benedict Mar Gregorios. The church stands in the territory of the Latin Diocese of Punalur too, as is usual in Kerala where Churches of different rites live side by side. After renovation, the church was consecrated again on 23 May 2025 by Cardinal Moran Mor Baselios Cleemis, Major Archbishop-Catholicos, and placed under the protection of the Mother of God. The report of that consecration does not mention the Host.
What the priest says happened
Nearly everything we know comes from one witness, the parish priest, in a written deposition. It is printed on an exhibition panel of the Istituto San Clemente, with a 2006 copyright, and copied on many pages. So many pages repeating it do not make more witnesses. The server and the people present do not speak for themselves in any text we could find.
| Date, 2001 | What the priest reports |
|---|---|
| Sat 28 Apr | The parish began its yearly novena to St Jude Thaddeus. At 8.49 in the morning he exposed the Blessed Sacrament in the monstrance for adoration. After a few moments he saw what looked like three dots in the Host. He stopped, looked, and asked the people to look too. He asked them to go on praying, and put the monstrance back in the tabernacle. |
| 30 Apr to 1 May | He offered the Qurbana on 30 April and left for Trivandrum the next day. |
| Sat 5 May, morning | He opened the church, vested, and opened the tabernacle to see the Host in the monstrance. He saw a figure like a human face. He was deeply moved and asked the people to kneel and pray. He asked the altar server what he saw. The boy answered that he saw "the figure of a man". The priest noticed the people looking hard at the monstrance. |
| During adoration | He says that the image grew clearer as the minutes passed, and that he wept. The reading that day was from John 20, where the risen Jesus shows his wounds to Thomas (John 20:24-29). He could say only a few words. |
| Same morning | He had to leave to offer the Qurbana at the nearby parish of Kokkodu, and called a photographer before going. He says that the photographs were ready after about two hours, and that the face looked clearer in each. |
Others have since added their reading. The 2006 panel says the likeness is similar to Christ crowned with thorns. A later Indian report says some linked the three dots to the wounds of Christ. Those are readings of the image, and not part of what the priest first reported.
The server and photographer are not named anywhere that could be found.
What the Archbishop said
Cyril Mar Baselios Malancharuvil (1935 to 2007) was Archbishop of Trivandrum from 1995, and in 2005 became the first Major Archbishop of the Church. English pages often misspell his name "Baselice".
Two short passages are given in his name. The panel gives: "For us believers what we have seen is something that we have always believed." And, "If our Lord is speaking to us by giving us this sign, it certainly needs a response from us." The Polish weekly Niedziela (2026) gives, in Polish and in substance, that the Catholic Church believes in the real presence of Jesus Christ, that others may read the event differently, but that if no natural reason can be found it is understandable and wise to believe that the Lord has given a special sign.
Notice the "if". Neither passage is a decree. Neither says a commission found the event supernatural. Some pages say he "investigated" it, but no report of an inquiry, its members or its findings could be found. We could not find the full letter, or its date.
Do not confuse it with Vilakkannur
Another Host with an image of a face is reported from Christ the King Church, Vilakkannur, in the Syro-Malabar Archdiocese of Tellicherry, in November 2013. There the process went through to the end. The Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith is reported to have said in March 2025 that nothing prevents declaring it an extraordinary event, and the Apostolic Nuncio announced the decision there on 31 May 2025. Press reports then called that India's first officially recognised Eucharistic miracle. So recognition at Vilakkannur says nothing about Chirattakonam, and the two should not be run together.
What is known
There is a real Syro-Malankara parish of St Mary at Chirattakonam. The parish priest wrote a dated account. Photographs were taken. The Archbishop of that time wrote a careful comment. An exhibition panel carrying a 2006 copyright tells the story.
What is less certain
The account rests on the priest's deposition, as the server and the people present have left no account of their own that could be found. What the marks are, as no test is reported. Whether anyone ever held a formal inquiry. Where and how the Host is kept and shown today, as this rests on reports not recently checked. No Church authority has said what the image is or whose face it may show.
On tests and questions
No scientific test on this Host could be found, by anyone. So no result can be given either way, and no named critic has written about it in any source we could find.
One general point may be kept in mind, though it is not a finding about this Host. Studies of hosts in Poland and elsewhere (Grzybowski and others, 2025; Kearse and Ligaj, 2024) show that moulds and bacteria can make red marks on bread, though mostly in hosts kept in water, and this Host was not reported to be in water. This shows nothing, either way, about what happened here. Equally, the fact that no natural cause has been offered does not show that there is none, as no one has tested it. The Archbishop's "if" remains the honest place to stand.
How the Church has honoured it
The honest answer is: quietly. Reports say the monstrance with the Host is kept in the church. No decree, feast, special indulgence, papal act or official pilgrimage connected with the event could be found. The exhibition of the Istituto San Clemente has carried the story around the Catholic world. The name also appears in Polish Catholic writing beside Lanciano, Sokółka and Legnica, but being named in a list is not recognition.
The fruits
The story has travelled far beyond Kerala through exhibitions and Catholic writing, and it turns attention to the Holy Qurbana. Beyond that, no figures for pilgrims and no reports of healings tied to the parish could be found.
If you visit
The parish address given is St Mary's Malankara Syrian Catholic Church, Chirattakonam, Thalachira P.O., Kollam 691 546. Times, and whether the Host can be seen, could not be confirmed. Please ask the parish or the Major Archeparchy of Trivandrum before you travel. Do come for the Holy Qurbana, which is the reason any of us goes to church. The photograph of the Host can be seen on the panel, which is under copyright, here or here.

What the Church teaches
Our faith rests on the words of Christ and not on any miracle or image. At every Holy Qurbana and every Mass, Christ is truly present in the Eucharist, with or without any sign (CCC 1374 to 1376). No one is obliged to believe in this event, and no one should be made to feel less Catholic for doubting it, or for loving it. As Mar Baselios said in substance, if a sign is given, it asks for a response, and the response is the same one the Church asks at every Qurbana.
